Chinese multinational technology company Alibaba Group Holding Ltd is supplying Uyghur/ethnic minority recognition as a cloud services, according to a new report by surveillance market researcher IPVM and The New York Situations.

Users only send images of people taken on their telephones or pulled from surveillance films to Alibaba’s facial recognition provider, then get an alert if the topic is discovered as a minority Uyghur from the western province of Xinjiang.

The Cloud Defend system made available by Alibaba Cloud “detects and recognizes text, shots, films, and voices made up of pornography, politics, violent terrorism, advertisements, and spam, and provides verification, marking, custom configuration and other capabilities.”
