Levin is the founder of the K–12 Cybersecurity Source Center and creator of the K–12 Cyber Incident Map, a visualization of cybersecurity-relevant incidents noted about US K–12 general public colleges and districts from 2016 to the current.

“I’ve been tracking the growth in attacks in this sector considering that 2016,” explained Levin. “We’ve witnessed a marked maximize above time, and a genuine spike due to the fact COVID-19. I’m happy to be signing up for an motion-oriented corporation that is doing the job to proactively secure educational facilities.”

K12 Six was softly introduced in Oct 2020 by the Global Resilience Foundation (GRF), a nonprofit subsidiary of the Countrywide Council of ISACs. It is the very first intelligence-sharing hub to be particularly made to meet the needs of nearby school districts in avoiding and mitigating cyber-attacks.

Staff at K12 6 are tasked with examining security incidents noted to them by faculties. Their position is also to enrich and share actionable alerts based mostly on intelligence supplied by private security distributors, other sharing communities, and govt sources.

The function of regional director at K12 6 has been loaded by Eric Lankford, previous cyber-engineer with the Birdville Unbiased College District in the vicinity of Fort Value, Texas.

Collectively, Levin and Lankford came up with the thought to generate an ISAC for universities and approached the GRF with their proposal two decades back.

With no federal requirement for faculty districts to report info breaches, Levin thinks that the Government Accountability Office (GAO) is not conscious of the real extent of the difficulty.

The GAO counted 99 college knowledge breaches from July 2016 to May 2020 that compromised the personalized information and facts of countless numbers of learners in kindergarten as a result of high university. Levin counted 458 information breaches in college districts that impacted much more than a million student information.

Whilst the GAO counted just about every cyber-attack as one particular incident no matter of how several school districts have been afflicted, Levin counted each and every district’s data breach independently.
