Uganda has arrested an author and activist and a Television journalist for allegedly cyber stalking the country’s President, Yoweri Museveni.
Author Norman Tumuhimbise and his colleague Farida Bikobere were reportedly bundled into a van by armed security staff past 7 days. The pair’s attorney, Eron Kiiza, verified their arrest on Thursday to the information agency Agence France-Presse (AFP).
Tumuhimbise is author of the 2015 e-book, Unsowing the Mustard Seed, in which he gives a firsthand account of his kidnap and torture by agents of Museveni, who has ruled Uganda because 1986.
The 36-year-old author, who sales opportunities area force team The Choice Motion and runs on the web media system Choice Digitalk Television exactly where Bikobere is used, was arrested forward of the prepared March 30 publication of a new reserve in which he criticizes Museveni.
“Norman Tumuhimbise and his colleague, Farida Bikobere, who operates with him at Digitalk Tv, were being charged with cyber stalking the president,” Kiiza informed AFP.
He added: “The two denied the prices and were being remanded to Luzira prison right until March 21.”
Kiiza alleged that phones, laptops, cameras and audio recording products belonging to Digitalk Tv set had been confiscated by Ugandan police.
The journalist and creator were arrested on March 10 along with seven other journalists through a raid on the places of work of Digitalk Television. All ended up billed with offensive interaction.
Although Tumuhimbise and Bikobere stay in detention in a most-security facility in Kampala, the seven other men and women have been launched on police bond on March 15 and 16.
Describing how his clientele experienced been taken care of by their captors, Kiiza explained: “Both of those were being tortured like the other journalists with whom they have been arrested.”
If convicted, Tumuhimbise and Bikobere could be sentenced to up to a yr in jail and/or issue a fantastic below Uganda’s Computer system Misuse Act.
In court files found by AFP, prosecutors accuse Tumuhimbise and Bikobere of using Alternative Digitalk Television set to distribute “offensive interaction… directed versus the human being of the President of Uganda”.
The arrest of Tumuhimbise arrives soon after the detention of award-successful Ugandan author Kakwenza Rukirabashaija who was charged with insulting the President and his son on social media.
