Ukrainian “cyber-police” have arrested 9 alleged associates of a prolific phishing gang that built 100 million hryvnias ($3.4m) by luring locals with the promise of financial guidance from the EU.
Electronic specialists teamed up with Pechersk Police Office officers and professionals from the National Financial institution of Ukraine (NBU) to crack the situation.
The 9 are accused of setting up and working over 400 phishing websites that asked for victims enter their lender account and card information in order to apply for social welfare payments from the EU.

When they acquired the knowledge, the gang would use it to hijack users’ accounts and transfer their funds.
In accordance to the NBU, above 5000 victims have been scammed this way, earning the fraudsters tens of millions.
