A DDoS-mitigation vendor reported its prospects were hit with a wave of volumetric attacks around the weekend made to flood their web sites with HTTP requests, like the largest such attack on file.
Cloudflare described in a blog article that it was pressured to mitigate dozens of the “hyper-volumetric” DDoS attacks, which were being released from above 30,000 IP addresses.
“The the vast majority of attacks peaked in the ballpark of 50–70 million requests for every second (rps) with the major exceeding 71 million rps. This is the greatest claimed HTTP DDoS attack on document, more than 35% higher than the earlier claimed file of 46 million rps in June 2022,” it described.

“Some of the attacked websites included a well known gaming provider, cryptocurrency companies, hosting providers and cloud computing platforms. The attacks originated from various cloud providers, and we have been performing with them to crack down on the botnet.”
The campaign follows a new pattern of DDoS attacks, not only in their increasing sizing but the point they originate from IP addresses inside cloud computing ecosystems.
In accordance to CompTIA, volumetric attacks are basically the least common type of DDoS, with considerably fewer found than software-layer and protocol attacks.
Nonetheless, Cloudflare warned that in Q4, HTTP DDoS attacks elevated by 79% year-in excess of-calendar year.
“Furthermore, the amount of volumetric attacks exceeding 100 Gbps grew by 67% quarter-about-quarter (QoQ), and the amount of attacks lasting more than a few several hours increased by 87% QoQ,” it extra.
“The audacity of attackers has been expanding as nicely. In our newest DDoS menace report, we saw that ransom DDoS attacks steadily enhanced during the year. They peaked in November 2022 exactly where one particular out of each and every 4 surveyed consumers documented staying topic to Ransom DDoS attacks or threats.”
DDoS-for-hire products and services make it somewhat easy for threat actors to start attacks today, and as Cloudflare reported, “the more you pay, the bigger and for a longer time of an attack you are likely to get.”
