US Democrats have urged the Federal Trade Fee (FTC) to unmask transparency-hindering tactics in the virtual private network (VPN) market on the heels of the Supreme Court’s ruling overturning Roe v. Wade.

Previously this thirty day period, Consultant Anna Eshoo (D-CA) and Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) wrote an open letter urging the FTC to “curtail abusive and deceptive facts tactics in businesses delivering VPN services to secure internet customers trying to find abortions.”

Citing info from shopper reports, Eshoo and Wyden pressured that abortion-seekers in the US are inclined to a bogus sense of security with 75% of the most common VPNs building hyperbolic statements and/or misrepresenting their merchandise.

The lawmakers also underscored studies that accuse different VPN services of misusing users’ information, and the absence thereof “practical applications or impartial analysis to audit VPN providers’ security statements.”

“With abortion unlawful or quickly to be unlawful in 13 states and severely restricted in many a lot more, these abusive and exploitative facts techniques are merely unacceptable,” the letter reads. 

“We urge the Federal Trade Fee (FTC) to just take rapid action… to curtail abusive and misleading facts techniques in firms delivering VPN companies to safeguard internet people in search of abortions.”

Additionally, the democrats urged the FTC to establish a ‘brochure’ detailing internet privacy, as well as the hazards and gains of utilizing a VPN.

“We will vigorously implement the law if we uncover illegal perform that exploits Americans’ place, health and fitness, or other delicate data,” said Kristin Cohen, FTC’s acting affiliate director in the division of privacy and identification security.
