A ransomware attack targeting educational facilities on the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts, compelled the closure Tuesday of four institutions, counting a full of around 1700 college students.

The district’s superintendent Elizabeth Hallett introduced the determination in an email to moms and dads and witnessed by Infosecurity.

“However, out of an abundance of warning, we will be canceling school tomorrow, Wednesday, February 1, for all team and students.”

The superintendent also clarified that all athletic procedures and video games, the Nantucket Neighborhood Pool and the Early Childhood Middle at Nantucket Elementary School experienced continued functions as scheduled.

According to Chris Clements, VP of solutions architecture at cybersecurity organization Cerberus Sentinel, principal faculties are a preferred focus on for cyber-criminals for two good reasons: the vulnerability of their IT units and the means to spend important extortion demands.
