The US authorities have indicted a Russian nationwide for allegedly orchestrating a Kremlin-backed “malign impact campaign” designed to sow discord and interfere in elections.
Moscow resident Aleksandr Viktorovich Ionov is accused of conspiring with at least 3 Russian officials to run the campaign from at least December 2014 till March 2022.
Operating less than the auspices of the Kremlin-backed Anti-Globalization Motion of Russia (AGMR) he founded, Ionov recruited several US political groups and “exercised path or handle around them” on behalf of Russian security company the FSB, in accordance to the Office of Justice (DoJ).

Ionov presented monetary support to the teams, persuaded them to publish pro-Russian propaganda, funded direct action by the groups within the US intended to further Russian interests and coordinated protection of these protests in the Russian media, the DoJ explained.
A single of the group’s objectives was to endorse California’s secession from the United States. Ionov is mentioned to have component-funded its protest demonstration at the California Capitol constructing in Sacramento and tried to immediate the group’s chief to bodily enter the governor’s business office.
Ionov is also accused of sponsoring unnamed candidates in local elections in Florida.
